J was referred to the service in Year 5 as she was a selective mute choosing to talk at home but never in school. During the course of her two years in therapy she started to grow in confidence. Communicating by writing things down, she was able to explain her anxieties and slowly overcome them. By the time she left the school in Year 6 she had blossomed. She was now talking to some chosen school friends (still only a whisper), however, she was determined that when she started secondary school (where no-one would know her) that she would talk. J left the school in 2013 and her parents have contacted us to let us know how delighted they are with her progress. She is happy at her new school, has lots of friends and is talking!
